Run a marathon!

Let me start off with a quote, “If you want to run, run a mile. If you want to experience a different life, run a marathon.”. Now I want to talk about something that’s probably not what you’re expecting. Some teachers will talk about the epidemic or some will talk about teaching. Well, we are all teachers. We all do it, we all know it, and live it. I always tell students, your teachers are much more interesting that they appear. So let me introduce something to you that is more interesting to me and hopefully you. My topic does involve teaching and also the epidemic. In the west, What did people choose to do during the lockdown? You bet, there are a lot of new runners today. Thanks to the quick action of epidemic prevention here in China, I am lucky that I am still able to run in a marathon. Whereas in other countries, many, if not all races are cancelled until the fall/autumn of this year. So why talk about marathons? Well, I saw this video literally the day before yesterday. So the topic is about teaching. What does it teach you? The video is called, “What is the best business education? Run a marathon.”. This professor, Andrew Johnston, taught business at a community college. His final exam was for his students to complete a marathon. Now why would he do that? Well, a marathon is a lot like business. It doesn’t matter if you’re the CEO or the cleaner. When you are doing this, it’s not about what you’re doing, but about the effort you put into it. When I run marathons, the people I see next to me, we are all the same. They could be CEO’s of companies or they could just be a normal bus driver (which I have met before.). Some people say that you should do this at least once in your life. Has anyone went skydiving before? People say you should also do this at least once in your life. But, there’s a difference. Skydiving requires no skill, no discipline, no training. You’re literally attached to somebody and you are gonna jump out of that plane whether you like it or not. But in a marathon, you have to put in the work to be able to finish. It takes discipline and in the video, this professor talks about his students. Some are overweight, some have health issues, but in the end, a lot of them were able to finish in time. He remembered each student by name and who they were, whether they themselves were business owners, parents, or people still figuring out what they want to do in life. In the end, what he taught them was self discipline. Imagine if you were able to finish a marathon. Any difficult thing in life or business that you encounter, you’re going to think to yourself, “I completed a marathon, whatever I am doing now, I know I can do, because completing a marathon was super difficult, but I was able to do it.”. This mindset transfers on to business and life. Now, I like running too. Now here’s another way running applies to teaching. Look at the shirt I’m wearing. Can anyone tell me what does it say? “NFLSXC Suqian School”. When I ran this marathon, I am a teacher representing the school. I love to do that. Let me tell you a little about myself. Actually, I first came to China as a volunteer. I recommend that you all volunteer if you can as well. It led me to where I am now. So if there’s a chance to do something good, I’ll do it. My run was not just for myself, but for what I also represented. Last year I also ran a marathon. I wrote an article about it and it’s on the school’s website. I do check the school’s website and you should check it out too. Look what it says here. “I hope in my next marathon, I can run under 4 hours.”. So, can you accomplish your goals that you set?”. Well, of course. I did it. And also, running led me to improving my Chinese. I’m part of a run club and do you think anyone speaks English? It’s a good opportunity to get involved in the community, especially doing things you like. It’s also improved my Chinese and let me better embrace life in China with locals. So what do I have to say about this? Health is important. Money comes and go, and so do jobs. Like my dad always says, you only have one body. You should take better care of it. Exercise is important. I am running Xianlin marathon this Sunday, so now you know why this is on my mind. To finish things off, take care of your body, and remember, don’t forget to wash your hands!
