My teaching philosophy

Good afternoon everyone, it’s my pleasure to be here today! For those who are not familiar with me, my name is Kristin. This is my second year here teaching at NFLSXL. Before we start, I would like to ask everyone a question:” Do you all have your teaching philosophy?” I would like to share mine with you all today.

?

As most of you may know, I came from a Chinese family and I have been exposed to some Chinese culture in the process of growing up. Among all the things I came into contact with, 《论语》 the Analects of Confucius has a great influence on my teaching philosophy.

?

Confucius (551~479 BC) was one of the most famous people in Ancient China. He was a well-known philosopher, educator and politician whom made many wise phrases and theories about law, life and government. My teaching philosophy revolves around his wise phrase “三人行,必有我师焉,择其善者而从之,其不善者而改之”. It is saying, “When three are walking together, I am sure to find teachers among them. I will select their good qualities to follow, their bad qualities to avoid.”? By saying this, Confucius was trying to convince us that even when walking in a party of no more than three, the person who is anxious to learn could always learn something of the other two. And I totally agree with his opinion! I believe that there is always something we can learn from each other, from colleagues, friends, even from our students. Life is a non-stop learning journey. Children know and understand more than we think they do. Sometimes we can also learn from them and there should be no shame in learning from a child.

?

I also believe that all children are unique and have a lot to give. Having an open conversation with my co-teachers had always been helpful in understanding my students better. So I can continuously adapt my lessons to meet the different requirements of them. I want my students to see themselves for who they are and understand that it is okay to be different. A bad score in a single subject doesn't mean that you’re a poor student or a bad person. At the end of the day, it’s only a test. It’s not the end of the world if you didn’t go well. Everyone has a thing to be good at. Some of them may be good at music. Some of them may be good at dancing. Some of them may be good at sports. Some of them may be good at art. Who knows? Everyone has his or her own talents, whether they are fully aware of or yet to be discovered. As a teacher, my responsibility is to create a safe and relaxing learning environment for my students. An environment where they can share ideas, have fun and discover their own hidden talents.

?

My aim is to let my students be creative, try not to limit their imaginations by spoon-feeding them the exact answer for everything. I always encourage my students to share their own opinion by telling them “There is no exact answer for such a question. Don’t be afraid to share your own opinion. As long as you can find a reason to support yourself, then your answer is a good answer! And it is okay to make mistakes. No body is born to be perfect. Teacher Kristin wasn’t born to be a teacher. She can also make mistakes. So, please don’t be afraid to make mistakes. And please don’t be afraid to point out mistakes that teacher Kristin made. Mistakes are something we can all learn from and that is how we can improve ourselves. Practice makes perfect.”

?

At the end, I would say that as a teacher, my responsibility is to teach more than just the language. I want my students to understand what is right and what is wrong, so they can all grow to become a better person. To finish off, I would like to leave everyone an open question “How can we become a better teacher? Or more in general, how can we become a better self?”
